Dental Teeth Cleaning
You might be surprised to know we use the same instruments your human dentist uses to clean above and below the gum line of your teeth. The main difference between a human dentistry and an animal dentistry is we always use anesthesia for our animal patients. Animals won’t sit still and keep their mouths open for forty minutes and swish and spit on command like humans do. So, we use a very safe gas anesthesia to perform the cleaning. The animal only remembers our gentle touch and kind words before they fall asleep for a little nap and they remember waking up to our attentive care and extra TLC.
A cleaning usually takes about thirty to forty minutes to complete. We also probe the pockets around each tooth and take measurements to record how healthy each tooth is. We pay particular attention to the areas where the pockets are really deep. This problem usually indicates the tooth is loose and may need to be extracted.
Once the cleaning, probing, and full mouth dental radiographs are taken and reviewed, your veterinarian will either determine your pet’s teeth are healthy and in great shape or take corrective action if there’s a problem. If we discover there are loose teeth or periodontal disease, we’ll need to extract the problem teeth. We’ll give you a full report when you come to pick up your pet later that day.
